Notes | The identification of this work as a portrait of Numerianus, tentatively proposed in 1961 by C. C. Vermeule, who acquired it for the museum, has not won much scholarly support. It has been rejected by, among others, Bergmann, Wegner, and Romeo in the works listed below. K. Fittschen has suggested that it may instead be a posthumous portrait of Commodus, while Bergmann has raised the possibility that it is a modern forgery. The museum label and online database currently describe the head only as a portrait of an unknown Roman man. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
