Summary[edit]

Description
English: Andrew Plimer

Portrait of COLONEL JOSIAH COTTIN (1771-1843)

with short powdered hair and side-whiskers, wearing a blue coat with a black collar and a white stock and cravat, sky background

7.6 by 6.2 cm.; 3 by 2 1/2 in

The sitter was the son of Alexander Cottin (d. 1794) of Cheverall's Green, Herefordshire. In 1792 he married Lavinia Chambers (d. 1830), daughter of the architect Sir William Chambers. From 1797 they lived in a grace and favour apartment in Hampton Court and had nine children, one of whom, Georgina Maria (1794-1859) was painted by Thomas Lawrence (University of Manchester).

Cottin served with the 10th Hussars until 1825, when he was dismissed as a result of the scandal of his affair with Miss Julia Storer (see previous lot). We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for his help in cataloguing this lot.
