English: English School, c.1760s
Portrait of Frederick, Lord North, 2nd Earl of Guilford (1732-1792), with his wife Anne, and child, possibly George Augustus, in a landscape, Wroxton Abbey beyond oil on canvas, unlined 70 x 50 in. (177.7 x 127 cm.) The present family portrait depicts Frederick, Lord North, 2nd Earl of Guilford (1732-1792) together with his wife Anne, daughter of George Speke (c. 1740-1797) and one of their seven children in a landscape. In the distance can be seen a view of the family seat Wroxton Abbey near Banbury in Oxfordshire, a Jacobean mansion dating from the early 17th century. It was constructed on the foundations of a 13th Century Augustinian priory and has hosted a number of royal and political figures, among them James I, Charles I, George IV, William IV, and Frederick Prince of Wales, as well as Horace Walpole and Theodore Roosevelt. |
