Portrait of Mrs Jordan in the character of Hippolyta

oil on canvas

73.1 x 60.1 cm.; 28¾ x 23⅝ in.

Dorothea Phillips, most commonly known as Dorothy Jordan, or Mrs Jordan (1761–1816) – a celebrated actress and mistress to King William IV – is shown here wearing male attire for her role as ‘Hypolita’ in Colley Cibber's She Would and She Would Not, one of her famous ‘breeches’ parts. The painting derives from a portrait of Dorothy Jordan by John Hoppner R.A., in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, reproduced in mezzotint by John Jones (see, for example, the print in the British Museum, London).
