Title |
English: A prince on horseback with attendants. Portrait of a ruler; single-page painting mounted on detached album folio. Portrait, possibly of Shah Sulayman, mounted on horseback with three attendants. He wears a gold robe with blue flowers and gold and red turban. Image surrounded by blue border decorated with gold flowers. The punning inscription most likely refers to Muhammad Zaman, the leading exponent of the Europeanising style of Persian painting in the last third of the 17th century. The inclusion of one sercant in European dress and another in Indian clothes suggest not only the cosmopolitan envirornment of the Safavid court but the artist's ability to paint in different styles as well.
