Summary[edit]

Description
English: Primŭ-aprilie ("April the First"): cartoon referencing the April 1866 election for the Romanian Constituent Assembly, published by Satyrul paper on April 3 (New Style: April 15), 1866. A ladder illustrating the ascent of various candidates. At the top, in monastic clothes, is Scarlat (Sofronie) Vârnav, holding up sheets marked Da! ("Yes!")—referencing his earlier activities as a political agitator, and his slogan Părintele S. Varnav d̦ice Da ("Father S. Vârnav Says Yes"). The shaved and karakul-wearing figure to his left is Ion Ionescu de la Brad, noted for his slogans about agricultural improvement. One of the figure underneath Ionescu de la Brad is Pantazi Ghica, holding up his scripts, Iadeșŭ and Pățitul. Another identifiable figure, on the right-side ladder, is the monocle-wearing Petre P. Carp, holding his own translation of Macbeth.
