English: Detail from folio 41 verso of the Codex Telleriano-Remensis, a 16th-century Mexican manuscript, showing a human sacrifice performed in the year 1 rabbit (1506). The Spanish text (not seen in this detail) which follows the Nahuatl glyphs translates into English as: "Year of one rabbit and of 1506. There were so many mice in the province of Mexico that they ate all the crops, and thus people came out at night with torches to protect the crops. In this year Monteçuma shot a man in this manner. The old men say this was to please the gods, since throughout the last two hundred years they were hungry in the year one rabbit."
