Summary
[edit]DescriptionPropeller hub from Junkers Ju 88D-1 (WKNr. 0881203 - 4N+EH) (50472591387).jpg |
English: Originally built as a Ju 88A with the WkNr. 0881203 but later converted to a Ju 88D-1. In February 1943 she was being operated by 1.F/22 with the code 4N+EH and was based at Høybuktmoen in Northern Norway, an airfield still active today as Kirkenes Airport.
On 17th February she was one of eight Ju88s tasked with attacking Russian shipping to the Southeast of Bjørnøya (Bear Island) in the Barents Sea. She was hit by AA fire from the ‘SS Andre Martin’ and the port engine was damaged. She eventuallly belly landed at Nordkinn, with the crew being unharmed. The almost complete airframe was recovered in 1999 and 2001 by the Norsk Luftfartsmuseum at Bodø and in a joint venture with the Berlin Technical Museum the aircraft is being restored in Hungary, with the fuselage already complete and returned to Bodø.
