During World War II in German-occupied Norway, the Norwegian Nazi Party "National Unity" (Norwegian: Nasjonal Samling or NS), organized a demonstration on September 16, 1941, with a subsequent protest meeting in Oslo. The demonstration was held "against England and jøssinger" (a term used to refer to Norwegian anti-Nazi resistance members) at the University Square (Universitetsplassen). NS Minister Gulbrand Lunde delivered a speech, and civilian residents of Oslo and Hird units participated. The event was prompted, in part, by the British torpedoing of two Norwegian coastal steamers on September 13, 1941, resulting in the death of 211 people. At 03:48, a torpedo launched from a British warplane sank the DS "Barøy" near Hamarøy, killing 112 people (18 were rescued). Later that morning, a British submarine torpedoed the DS "Richard With" near Rolvsøya, claiming the lives of 99 people (31 survived).

The colorized image shows "Dr. Lunde" in his dark blue Hird uniform standing at the speaker's podium in front of the staircase hall of the Midtbygningen building. On each side, two uniformed representatives from the Guttehirden or Unghirden (the boys' organizations of the Norwegian Nazi Party) are lined up, holding (presumably) tehe green flag of the NS Youth Faction (NS Ungdomsfylkings) and the national flag of Norway. The building is adorned with two long banners (the Norwegian flag and NS's own red and yellow cross flag) and NS's "sun cross eagle" (solørn) symbol. The Filmavisen newsreel from September 29, 1941, also includes a brief propaganda report on the "Demonstration against England."
