Summary[edit]

Description

The day after Angry Friday. The police had retreated from Tahrir Square the previous evening - unable to keep back the angry crowds of demonstrators. Across the country some 2000 police vehicles and around 100 police stations had been burned.

But it was the protesters who had suffered the suffered the worst casualties - some 68 reported killed by Reuters in the three cities of Cairo, Alexandria and Suez and approximately two thousand injured.

However there was now a sense that the people had at last lost their fear. The nation was on the verge of a new era in its' history and In the area of the Square only the people and the army, who had been called out on to the streets the previous afternoon, remained.

The crowds soon began to return in large numbers and a few protesters in Tahrir Square hitched a lift on a tank transporter and soon more followed until there were probably about a hundred people clinging to the lorry.

It slowly circled the square and then moved out under Sixth October Bridge (where I took this picture) followed by a large crowd of people. In view of the violence to follow perhaps the celebratory mood was a little premature.
