Summary

[edit]
Description

Purpus buckwheat, Eriogonum kennedyi var. purpusii, California, White Mountains, Black Mountain, Owens Valley drainage, elevation 2431 m (7975 ft).

Purpus buckwheat is distinguished from other varieties of Eriogonum kennedyi by its small, densely matted, silvery-white leaves. When not in flower, these leafy mats can also masquerade as other species commonly found in the same area, such as Eriogonum caespitosum or Eriogonum wrightii. But when in flower, the naked green flowering stems and single spherical heads of white flowers can't be mistaken for anything else.

Purpus buckwheat is a regional endemic, found mainly on the slopes and mountains on both sides of Owens Valley in Inyo and Mono counties, California, and extending shortly into Esmeralda County, Nevada, and shortly south in the Sierra Nevada into Kern and Tulare counties, California. It ranges in elevation from the sagebrush steppe zone to the subalpine, about 1500-3300 meters, and seems common enough within its region.

This variety is named for Carl Albert Purpus (1851[or 1853?]-1941), German born botanist and physician, who explored the region between 1895 and 1899. All the other varieties of Eriogonum kennedyi are endemic to the mountains of southern California.
