Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Centered on the stretch of Michigan Avenue just south of Genesee Street on the Near East Side of Buffalo, New York is the proposed Liberty Bank Historic District, a remarkably intact example of a period streetscape the western half of which is seen in this September 2021 view. The cluster of buildings seen here at 215-223 Genesee Street has been home for almost half a century to the Quermback Electric Company, but they were originally individually owned by a variety of different businesses. The Neoclassical structure on the corner was erected in 1927 by the Frontier National Bank, and only a few years later became a branch of the Liberty Bank of Buffalo. The history of the building immediately to its right is a bit murkier, but it may have been built (and in any case was definitely heavily altered) in 1906 by Schwegler Bros., who operated a bicycle shop there. The oldest buildings on the block are the five- and three-story Italianates on the far right: respectively, they were built in 1871 and 1873 as Lorenz Granacher's furniture store and factory and Adam Geyer's hat shop.
