Summary[edit]

Description
English: WkNr 290202

The He219 was a technically advanced German night-fighter which could have seriously disrupted Allied bomber streams if larger numbers had entered service. It was the first military aircraft to be fitted with ejection seats and the first aircraft with a tricycle undercarriage to see Luftwaffe service. The type first flew in November 1943 and 294 had been built by the end of the war, of which 268 entered service. The name ‘Uhu’, translates as ‘Eagle-Owl’ a most appropriate sounding name for a German night-fighter. This is the only surviving example. It was shipped to the Unites States after WW2 and given the Foreign Evaluation identity FE-614, later changed to T2-614. It was test flown at Freedom Field, Indiana and then allocated for museum use and stored at Park Ridge, Illinois. In 1949 it was officially transferred to the Smithsonian Institute and moved to Silver Hill, Maryland. Nearing the end of a complete restoration, she is seen in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
