[edit]DescriptionRMS Titanic Women's Memorial (35733167).jpg |
The Women's Titanic Memorial is a granite statue in southwest Washington, D.C., that honors the men who died on the RMS Titanic. The thirteen-foot-tall figure is of a partly clad male figure with arms outstretched. The statue was erected by the Women's Titanic Memorial Association. The memorial is located on P Street SW next to the Washington Channel near Fort Lesley J. McNair. It was designed by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, who won the commission in open competition, and sculpted by John Horrigan. It was unveiled on May 26, 1931, by Helen Herron Taft, the widow of President Taft. It was originally located on the site where the Kennedy Center now stands. It was moved to its present location in 1972. A replica of the head of the memorial, carved in marble and exhibited in Paris in 1921, was purchased by the French Government for the Musée du Luxembourg. In the 1997 film Titanic there is a scene in which Kate Winslet imitates the statue's pose on the bow of the Titanic. The inscription on the Titanic Women's Memorial reads: To The Brave Men Who Perished In The Wreck of The Titanic, April 15, 1912. They Gave Their Lives That Women and Children Might Be Saved. Erected By The Women Of America. People often assume that the memorial is to the women who perished on the Titanic, but if you read the inscription this makes it plain that it is to the men. Women in America raised the money and organized the building of the monument. Every April 15, about 20 men don tuxedos, eat a sumptuous meal at the Watergate, and then, around midnight, climb into limousines that whisk them south toward Washington harbor. Even in these days of rapid-fire gentrification, the D.C. harbor is not the sort of place to find limos cruising late at night. But these men proceed undeterred—after all, some of them have been doing it for the better part of three decades—to a point along the water near Ft. McNair. There, at the foot of the Women’s Titanic Memorial, they are met by a waiter with Champagne glasses. They mill around, chatting, and at 12:30 the members of the Titanic Men’s Society raise their glasses to toast the sinking of the Titanic. |
