רבי יהודה נשיאה הוזכר כמי שהתנהג בענווה ובפשטות[20] .

בתלמוד[21] מסופר, שרבי יהודה נשיאה גזר תענית בגלל עצירת גשמים, ולא ירד גשם. אמר: כמה הבדל יש משמואל הרמתי, שביקש גשם בקיץ וירד, ועד יהודה בן גמליאל, שמתפלל לגשמים בזמנם ולא נענה! אוי לו לדור שכך נתקע, או לו למי שעלתה בימיו כך! הצטער, וירדו גשמים.

רבי יהודה נשיאה העריך מאוד את לימודם של "תינוקות של בית רבן" - כלומר ילדים הלומדים בבית רבם, ומפורסמת האמרה הבאה שאמר בשמו תלמידו, ריש לקיש[22]:

"אין העולם מתקיים אלא בשביל הבל[23] תינוקות של בית רבן". באותו עניין נמסרה בשמו ההלכה הבאה:

"אין מבטלין תינוקות של בית רבן (מלימודם) אפילו לבנין בית המקדש". רבי יהודה נשיאה נקבר בציפורי, דרום מערבית לגן לאומי ציפורי.

לאחר פטירתו, מילא בנו, רבן גמליאל הרביעי, את מקומו בנשיאות.
