Description
Français : Certains arbres creux (ici un frêne) forment des racines dans leur propre bois mort en décomposition où ils puisent les nutriments nécessaires à leur croissance. Ils peuvent alors croître et refaire du bois vers l'intérieur de leur tronc. Ce arbres ont souvent un âge sous-estimé, car leur croissance en diamètre apparent est stoppée ou ralentie. Une condition est que le bois mort à coeur soit assez humide (ici : Parc boisé de la Citadelle, Lille, nord de la France).
