DescriptionRacism hurts everyone - A lone Dover resident bravely leaves her home to confront a right wing anti-immigrant march along the city's seafront with a much needed appeal for tolerance and humanity. (27336011305).jpg |
28 May 2016 - I was happy to meet this brave and outspoken resident of Dover who had earlier kindly offered me food and drink while I was sitting near the seafront waiting for an opportunity to photograph the right wing march. According to the RT video and report and a Dover Mercury reporter some of the marchers chanted "no more refugees" and one of whom, according to both RT and News24, held up an English flag with "Refugees not welcome" written on it. www.rt.com/uk/344757-eu-flag-burning-dover/ www.news24.com/World/News/british-far-right-burn-eu-flag-... twitter.com/DoverMercury/status/736583426036359168 Closing our borders would mean we would be refusing to help all those fleeing persecution from brutal dictatorial regimes, some of which Britain still maintains diplomatic relations with and some to which the U.K still sells arms (such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt.) And yet while our multinationals strike deals and profit from these corrupt regimes to the tune of billions, some of us become angry instead about accepting just a tiny fraction of the refugees fleeing the persecution and injustice of those same regimes which we prop up and profit from. In my view and I am sure it is one widely shared, Dover should reject the narrow minded dogmatism espoused by right wing groups and instead be rightly proud of its multicultural heritage and history which is also about being part of a country which continues to provide a refuge for some of those in dire need. |
