Ce refuge de montagne est situé dans le massif du Madrès, sur le bord oriental du plateau granitique du Pla dels Gorgs (des Gourgs), surplombant un cirque glaciaire et un lac de montagne appelé Gorg Negre. Le refuge se trouve à un peu plus d'un kilomètre au sud-est du Pic de Madrès (el Madres, 2468 mètres). Le refuge est entretenu par le Club Alpin Français Prades Canigou (https://refugedenohedes.ffcam.fr/). Il y a une source à proximité, la Font de la Perdiu (= Perdrix) - en médaillon. La source se trouvait autrefois sur la variante Madrès du Tour du Capcir GRP (sentier de grande randonnée de pays). Cette variante n'existe plus, mais certaines des balises rouges et jaunes du GRP sont encore visibles, comme sur le poteau adjacent à la source.
