| Description | Today, on what not to do with an historic property you own, I am going to discuss this structure at the corner of Oakdale Avenue and Regent Avenue in the Old Bond Hill historic district, located within Cincinnati's Bond Hill neighborhood. I'll start with what has been gotten wrong. Never, never, never cover your historic house in Vinyl Siding, especially a brick structure such as this one. It creates tons of problems with the brick underneath, and looks downright ugly. Additionally, the rear addition should be somewhat compatible with the original, whereas here it isn't, and looks rickety and about to fall over. What has been gotten right by this homeowner, however, is also of note. The original tall windows on the first floor have been kept intact with replacements of the same size and type, and the house has been kept in at least somewhat decent shape, both of which are better than what can be said for many of these other early homes in the neighborhood. Hopefully, the next owner will put in the effort and resources to restore this house back to its original state. |
