Deutsch: Bei Ascuris Planum handelt es sich um einen Teil der Marskruste, der über einen sehr langen Zeitraum der Marsgeschichte unter hohem tektonischem "Stress" gestanden haben muss. Die meisten parallelen Gräben haben einen Verlauf von Nordosten nach Südwesten. Allerdings gibt es auch Gräben, die diese Hauptrichtung schneiden. Dies weist auf eine Veränderung im "Stress-Regime" hin, wie die Geologen solche Krustenspannungen beschreiben.
Diese Aufnahmen der vom Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) betriebenen hochauflösenden Stereokamera (HRSC) auf Mars Express zeigen die Horst- und Grabenlandschaft von Ascuris Planum. Dieses auffällige tektonische Phänomen von tiefen Gräben und dazwischen liegenden erhöhten Schollen findet man auf dem Mars an zahlreichen Stellen. Die Bilder wurden mit der vom Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) betriebenen, hochauflösenden Stereokamera HRSC an Bord der ESA-Raumsonde Mars Express aufgenommen. Das Gebiet liegt im Nordosten der großen Vulkanregion Tharsis, wo es viele weitere solcher geologischen Strukturen gibt. Die Tharsis-Region hat einen Durchmesser von mehreren tausend Kilometern und besitzt eine schildförmige Aufwölbung von etwa fünf Kilometern, die im Laufe von mehreren Milliarden Jahren entstanden ist.
