Le château. Reignac-sur-Indre Castle. A l'époque romaine, le village port le nom de Brixis. Une motte féodale dont il ne subsiste aucun vestige est mentionnée dans les écrits des XIe et XIIe siècles. Un premier castrum remonterait à Foulques Nerra* (972-1040). Foulques III le Noir dit Foulques Nerra, comte d'Anjou, fit construire de nombreuses places fortes en Anjou et une partie de la Touraine. Vers 1160, l'existence d'un pont est attestée à Brayes ou Brays (Reignac-sur-Indre). En 1213, un certain Pierre de la Brosse tenait la terre de la Brosse en la paroisse de Breis, aujourd'hui Reignac-sur-Indre, il était serviteur de Dreu de Mello, seigneur de Loches et de Châtillon. Le château actuel est bâti sur les vestiges d'une ancienne forteresse du XVe siècle, dont il reste deux tours cylindriques. En 1420, la famille du Fau devient propriétaire, et en 1490 le Fau est érigé en baronnie. Le village prend le nom du seigneur. La famille du Fau modernise la forteresse médiévale et ouvre le château en supprimant deux tours sur les quatres d'origine. Le château est remanié au début du XVIIIe siècle par le nouveau propriétaire, Louis de Barberin: comblement des douves, construction de communs, et la chapelle Saint-Louis (première pierre bénie le 30 juillet 1717), aménagement d'un parc à la française. Louis de Barberin deviendra marquis de Reignac par lettre patente de Louis XIV en 1710. Le dernier seigneur de Reignac sera Joseph Gilbert Paul du Mottier, marquis de La Fayette, qui était l'arrière petit-fils de Louis de Barberin. Ce même Lafayette qui ira chercher la gloire en Amérique. En 1861 le domaine est racheté par la famille Müller (L'habillage néogothique du château remonte à cette époque). Edouard Müller** est un banquier parisien, il deviendra maire de Reignac et député. Mis en faillite en 1911, le château est saisi et revendu à la famille Vibraye-Cheverny qui le conservera jusqu'en 1978. Le château de Reignac a été entièrement restauré en 2003.
En 989, il épouse Elisabeth, fille du comte Bouchard de Vendôme, fidèle du roi de France Hugues Capet. En seconde noces, il épousera Hildegarde de Metz, fille du comte de Sundgau, dont il aura quatre enfants (dont Geoffroi II Martel, qui lui succédera). Il meurt le 21 juin 1040 au retour d'un pélerinage en Terre Sainte.
