[edit]DescriptionReplica of Central Pacific Railroad - 60 steam locomotive (4-4-0) (Golden Spike National Historic Site, Utah, USA) 1 (22825879887).jpg |
This is a working replica of a wood-burning, 4-4-0 steam locomotive - the original was one of two engines that met at Promontory Summit in Utah, USA on 10 May 1869. The meeting represented the completion of North America's first transcontinental railroad. The ceremony was marked by driving the last four railroad spikes - the 4th-to-last, 3rd-to-last, and 2nd-to-last spikes were made of gold, silver, and a gold-silver-iron alloy. The very last spike was gold. This replica is on display at Golden Spike National Historic Site in Utah. It was built in 1979 by O'Connor Engineering Laboratories. The original engine, nicknamed "Jupiter", was built in September 1868 by Schenectady Locomotive Works and used as Central Pacific Railroad # 60. It was disassembled in 1909. |
