Summary

[edit]
Description

These are working replicas of 4-4-0 steam locomotives - the originals met at Promontory Summit in Utah, USA on 10 May 1869. The meeting represented the completion of North America's first transcontinental railroad. The ceremony was marked by driving the last four railroad spikes - the 4th-to-last, 3rd-to-last, and 2nd-to-last spikes were made of gold, silver, and a gold-silver-iron alloy. The very last spike was gold.

The replicas are on display at Golden Spike National Historic Site in Utah. They were built in 1979 by O'Connor Engineering Laboratories. The original engines were built in 1868. In the above photo, the engine on the left is "Jupiter" - Central Pacific Railroad # 60. The engine on the right is Union Pacific Railroad # 119. They were disassembled in 1909 and 1903, respectively.
