| Description |
English: The Rev. Scott Fisher and the Rev. Shirley Lee, then the priests at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Fairbanks, Alaska, preside over a service in memory of the missing and murdered in Fairbanks. Shirley Demientieff, an Alaska Native activist originally from Nenana and a longtime resident of Fairbanks, originally organized the service in remembrance of Sophie Sergie, who was murdered at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1993. This service marked the 20th anniversary of that event. In this photo, they are shown across from the downtown post office. The participants marched from St. Matthew's to this location in remembrance of Johnny Wallis, the brother of Velma Wallis, who was found burning while sleeping in the post office lobby in January and later died of his injuries. |
