Summary

[edit]
Description Replica of Richard Trevithick's 0-4-0 built in 1801 at the Pen y Darren Ironworks, South Wales as a stationary steam hammer for ironmaster Samuel Homfray who made a bet with fellow ironmaster Richard Crawshay that a steam locomotive could haul 10 tons of iron from the Ironworks along the 9.75 mile long Merthyr Tydfil Tramroad (4'2" gauge) to the Glamorgan Canal at Abercynon. To perform the bet, the steam hammer was converted by Rees Jones at the Ironworks to a railway locomotive by fitting wheels and motion to it. The locomotive then won the bet for Trevithick (with 70 people - including many who hitched a lift on the iron carrying wagons!) and was thus the first steam locomotive to successfully haul a train - even though it destroyed the light rails behind it and never ran again! It was, in fact, converted back into a stationary steam enigine at the ironworks. Note that the engine has just one cylinder which is located in the boiler (!) at the opposite end to the smookebox and chimney, and then drives the driving wheels via a complicated arrangement of rods, levers and cogged wheels. At the Swansea Maritime Museum, 06/09.
