Summary[edit]

Description Ministry of Supply "Austerity" type 18" 0-6-0ST, Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn No.7161 of 1944; it was War Department No.71507 and was allocated by the Ministry of Fuel and Power's Diectorate of Opencast Coal Production to Skiers Spring OCS, Wentworth. Post war it was operated by the National Coal Board's Open Cast Executive who used it as their sites at Watnall, Nottinghamshire and finally Glyn Neath, South Wales, where it was withdrawn in 1969. The photograph shows 7161 crossing the bridge over the River Neath (Afon Nedd) at the Glyn Neath OCS (operated by Parkinson's) on New Year's Day, 1969. It did not have long to work! The (scanned) photograph was taken with a Kowa SET. Intended for use by the WD at military sites, open cast coal and disposal points and collieries inn the UK and with the armed forces abroad, both during and after the war, the "Austerities" were designed by R.A. Riddles of the M.o.S and Hunslet. They were essentially a development of Hunslet's 18" "48150" and "50550" 0-6-0ST's, with changes in materials and detail design to aid production and minimise use of strategic materials. They were had a life expectancy of 2 years of, admittedly arduous, service but many lasted until the end of industrial steam in the UK in the 1970's. They were extremely rugged and reliable and could operate with minimum maintenance.
