Roland B. Molineux Terrorizes Village. Races Through Babylon, Half Clad, Assaulting Men and Women He Meets. Inquiry Into His Sanity. Patient at MacLevy's Farm. Second Nervous Breakdown Since His Play Was Put On. Roland B. Molineux, who was tried twice for the murder of Mrs. Katherine L. Adams in 1899, and who spent twenty months in the death house at Sing Sing before he was acquitted in 1902, caused a stir in Babylon, L.I., early yesterday morning by escaping from a sanitarium, where he was undergoing treatment for a nervous breakdown, and running through the streets of the village, knocking down every one who crossed his path. After a struggle with policeman Molineux was subdued and put into the village lock-up. Several hours later he was arraigned on the technical charge Of disorderly conduct and remanded until today, when his sanity will be inquired into. Molineux has been a patient at MacLevy's Health Farm, on the Southshore Road, about a mile from the village, since last Thursday. He had received treatment at the farm before, and was a friend of the proprietor. About 2 o'clock yesterday morning, dressed only in trousers and a running shirt, over which he had thrown a bathrobe, Molineux stole out of the house and started on a run for the village. As he entered the town, the few people who were in Main Street stopped to look in wonder. Apparently their scrutiny angered Molineux, for he rushed into a group, and letting fly with his fists, knocked several over. Two of the spectators were women, and they went down with the men. One man. Roy Gaino, jumped upon Molineux and tried to hold but Molineux easily shook him off and started again on the run through the streets. Molineux knocked down each person he met until he came to Policeman Devin. Devin knew Molineux, and started to talk to him. After a time Molineux became quiet, and Devin ordered a taxicab. The two got in and started back to the Levy farm. By the time the farm was reached Molineux was violent again, and it was all the policemen could do to hold him until he aroused Director Levy. The latter recently broke his arm and was no match for his patient. The policeman was being pretty well battered up when he managed to slip a chain nipper around Molineux's wrists and took him in the taxicab to the village lockup. Yesterday morning Molineux was arraigned before Justice Wilson on the charge of disorderly conduct. He refused to make any statement, but apparently was much quieter. He was taken back to the lockup. and a few hours later the Molineux family physicians, Drs. Cruikshank and Brush of Brooklyn, made an examination of the patient. It was said that they would examine him again today and determine if he is insane. Father Higgins of St. Joseph's Church called upon Molineux and had much success in keeping him passive. It was said in Babylon that Molineux was suffering from overwork on his play recently produced by David Belasco. This play, "The Man Inside." is based on the author's observations while in Sing Sing. This is said to be the second breakdown that Molineux has suffered within a year.
