The text of the inscription is the following:

Agorii. / Vettio Agorio Praetextato, v(iro) c(larissimo), // (first column) pontifici Vestae, / pontifici Soli(s), /(5) quindecemviro, / auguri, / tauroboliato, / curiali, / neocoro, /(10) hierofantae, / patri sacrorum, // (second column) quaestori / candidato, / praetori urbano, /(5) correctori Tus/ciae et Umbriae, / consulari / Lusitaniae, / proconsuli /(10) Achaiae, / praefecto urbi, / praee(ecto) (sic, for ‘praefecto’) praet(orio) II (sic) / Italiae et Illyrici, / consuli /(15) designato. // (on the side) Dedicata Kal(endis) Febr(uariis) / d(omino) n(ostro) Fl(avio) Valentiniano Aug(usto) III / et Eutropio conss(ulibus).

which can be translated as:

“[Statue of] Agorius. To Vettius Agorius Praetextatus, of clarissimus rank, priest of Vesta, priest of the Sun god, member of the board of fifteen men (for sacred affairs), augur, tauroboliate, curialis (of Hercules), neocorus (temple warden), hierophant (of Hecate), father of the sacred rites [of the cult of Mithras), quaestor candidatus, urban praetor, corrector (governor) of Tuscia et Umbria, consularis (governor) of Lusitania, proconsul (governor) of Achaia, prefect of the City, praetorian prefect of Italy and Illyricum for the second time, consul designate. (on the side) Dedicated on the Kalends of February, during the consulship of our lord Flavius Valentinianus (II) for the third time and Eutropius.”

The base was first recorded as in the gardens of the Matthei family, on the Caelian Hill (Lanciani, Forma Urbis Romae, 1990, pl. 36). The base is now on display at Palazzo Altemps, on the ground floor courtyard.
