Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Römerite
Locality: Island Mountain Mine, Island Mountain, Trinity County, California, USA (Locality at mindat.org)
Dozens of deep red, attractive crystals to 2 mm of the rare iron sulfate Römerite make this an attractive and rich specimen for the species. It is the best of 3 pieces obtained from a single large piece which I broke open to explore a vein of crystals that seemed to run inside (and this one gets the original label). Interestingly, this locality has NOT been reported for the species according to the MINDAT database, though its possible that the county borders have shifted since 1925 and this now overlaps one of the mines noted (?). In any case, this collector named Vonsen seems to have provided a number of Californian specimens to Gage. Note the somewhat premium price on the Gage label (not shown but included) of $10 in 1925 - a fortune in the day for an ugly little rock! He must have regarded this as an exceptional acquisition at the time (and compared to what I have seen of the German stuff, it IS exceptional for the species). 5 x 5 x 4 cm
