El NIDDK es parte de los Institutos Nacionales de Salud, que a su vez dependen del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de EE.UU. Fundado en 1987, el NKUDIC ofrece información sobre las enfermedades de los riñones y de las vías urinarias a las personas que padecen de estas enfermedades y a sus familiares, a los profesionales sanitarios y al público en general. El NKUDIC responde a preguntas, produce y distribuye publicaciones, y colabora estrechamente con organizaciones profesionales, gubernamentales y de pacientes para coordinar los recursos sobre las enfermedades de los riñones y de las vías urinarias.
Publicaciones producidas del centro coordinador de información son revisadas cuidadosamente de científicos del NIDDK y de expertos fuera de la organización.
