Squad of Thiyars from the Royal Procession of Sree Rama Daivathar at Kanathur Temple

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Daivathar is one of the main deities in Malabar. Because he told lies his tongue was torn out by the other deities, so the person who takes his part is dumb. A Tiya woman, who went to Andalur near Tellicherry to worship, put the deity on her umbrella and this brought him to Kannanur. The Kanathur temple was erected on the spot where she put down her umbrella. It has since attracted other deities to it. Daivathar is supposed to be a part of Sri Raman and is much honoured and very loved by the people. Only a Peruwannoon (a member of the caste of the Pandschamas) can enjoy the privilege of being allowed to personify him and wear his golden crown at the annual festival.
