Summary

[edit]
Description

Limestone is the third most common sedimentary rock in the world. It is a biogenic sedimentary rock composed of the mineral calcite (CaCO3 - calcium carbonate). Calcite and limestone are readily identified by bubbling in acid. Numerous varieties of limestone exist. Seen here is a common type called "fossiliferous limestone", which has a mix of whole fossils, fragmented fossils, and fine-grained matrix.

The large gray fossils in the rock are rugose corals, commonly called "horn corals". Rugosans are an extinct group - they only occur in Paleozoic rocks. The soft parts were sea anemone-like creatures called polyps. The polyps made calcareous hard-part skeletons. Most rugosans were solitary, but some were colonial. Solitary rugose corals are present here - they have solid, tapering skeletons of calcite. Erosion has exposed some of the internal structure in these specimens.

Classification: Animalia, Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Rugosa

Stratigraphy: undetermined, but possibly from the Columbus Limestone, Middle Devonian

Provenance: unknown, but probably from Ohio, USA

Locality: border block at edge of gravel parking lot, Hebron Evans Park, southern Licking County, east-central Ohio, USA
