English translation[edit]

Rutger Maclean, landlord, politician. died July 27, 1742. Parents: Colonel, Frihere Rutger Maclean and Baroness Vilhelmina Eleonora Coijet. With regard to M's public life, it may be mentioned that he advanced the military rank in Major at Kalmar Regiment, within the court charge to chamberlain to Queen Sofia Magdalena, and that he was a member of the Academy of Sciences and an honorary member of the Agricultural Academy. Upon access to Svaneholm's large manor house in Scania, which he inherited from his uncle, öfCoijet, he found the property in default of the chief and the estate's subordinate, through unwise and unwilling contracts, immersed in poverty, complacency, laziness and ignorance. With a willpower that deserves as much praise as admiration, he immediately embarked on a transformation, no matter how much his subordinates struggled against it. The entire estate was divided into parts and divided into farms, which were fenced and built on. The lease, which had previously been paid for work and burdensome journeys to the manor, turned into a cheap monetary fee. Agriculture was changed and managed according to a method devised by the circulation owner himself. And the Svaneholm estate, which, when M. received it, could with necessity feed seven hundred starving, sluggish and wretched creatures, had at his death to show twelve hundred industrious, prosperous and satisfied people. In step with the economic improvement, care was drawn to the moral. He himself had people build schools, paid teachers, wrote and distributed to his farmers and crofters a small book, called A Householder's Duties, etc.
