Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Side-altar dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk, Church of the Visitation (former Franciscan church), Sümeg, Veszprém county, Hungary. The Countess Viczay from Sopron donated the altar erected in the second half of the 18th century on the nave's right side. According to tradition, the altarpiece can be attributed to Stefan Dorfmeister Sr. In the centre of the altar is the image of John Nepomuk listening to the confession of the Czech queen. In the lower part of the painting, a figure representing the cuckolded man, above the confessional scene, angels and cherubs, one with a palm branch, the other with keys and his index finger reaching her mouth as a sign of silence. Other angels bear a bishop's crown, at the feet of John and the Queen, on a cushion are secular royal insignia (crown, law-staff). The altar is flanked by gilded statues of St. John the Evangelist and St. John the Baptist (so-called altar of Saint Johns), on the altar table a painting of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in an ornate rococo frame. The frame of the altarpiece itself is surmounted by a rocaille carving imitating a three-hole stone bridge, while the altar's upper part bears a wreath of clouds and angels, with a palm branch and a lily, with a painted carving in the center depicting the saint's tongue.
