Description
English: S.L.Cassar, Two sailors
Both sailors are wearing sennet hats.They were abolished 16 March 1921.Both men are one badge leading seamen gunners.The one sitting down has two trade badges on his sleeve.The top one is a normal gunner's badge. The bottom one shows he is also a torpedo specialist. By 1885, the invention of the torpedo led to the introduction of a new family of ratings.Men were trained in both weapons (guns and torpedoes), and this led to both guns and torpedoes appearing on their badges, the armament for which they were primarily trained being placed on top of the other. These badges lasted only five years and were modified in 1890. In 1903, each branch became completely independent of the other and wearing devices showing the one weapon only.
