Summary

[edit]
Description

This series of photos shows the history of a railway tunnel on the Walensee rail line between Sargans and Murg. The story of a special discovery in 27 pictures.

The first Bommerstein tunnel with a length of 188 m and only one track was in operation from 1859 to 1941. From 1939 to 1941, a new, double tracked tunnel was built with a length of 453 m. The old tunnel was taken over by the army during the Second World War, and fortified. This interesting detail you will probably see here for the first time. The tunnel was then used for various purposes and partially rebuilt as shown in the photos. Today it is abandoned.

This picture shows the striking rocky hill Bommerstein east of Mols and the current tunnel from 1941, left of the road. The tunnel will be renovated in two years and should be rehabilitated till 2023. The old tunnel portal was about 70 meters on the left of this one and does not exist anymore. But there are still wall remains and a shaft access.

This report is not made in the sense of 'Lost Places'. Everything is precisely described and with geotags as documentation for the historical heritage. If you visit this place, you must answer for any consequences yourself. Switzerland, Sep 3, 2018. (1/27)
