Summary[edit]

Description
English: While working as a US Customs Inspector, I took this shot of the tanker SS Manhattan. The SS Manhattan, the first tanker to navigate the northwest passage across the Canadian Artic from the Atlantic to Pacific oceans in 1969. She was built in 1962 and was the largest tanker in the US fleet at that time. I took this photo in Oct 1981 from the 33rd St pier within the Northeast Marine Ocean Terminal in south Brooklyn. The SS Manhattan was tied up at a port authority pier across the Gowanus Bay. She was scrapped in 1987.
