[edit]DescriptionSaffron Walden - Bridge End Garden - Dutch Garden from NE 2016-12-04 - Flickr - sps1955.jpg |
The garden was created by the Quaker Gibsons, one of Saffron Walden's leading families; it was not attached to their house, but formed on open ground on the edge of the town. The garden certainly existed by 1828 but serious development began c.1840 in collaboration with William Chater, a local nurseryman and garden designer. After being inherited by the Fry family of Bristol, the garden was open to the public by 1902 and was leased to the Borough Council from 1918. It was restored in the early 2000s and is Grade II*-listed: www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/10... . The garden is divided by walls and hedges into several smaller gardens. Individual features may be hard to date but the Dutch Garden is thought to be part of the c.1840 design. It was visited in the early C20 by Gertrude Jekyll, who included a plan in Gardens for small country houses by her and Lawrence Weaver (1913). The viewing platform from which this photo was taken is on the right of her plan (see below). |
