西教寺本堂の前面で全幅に亘る広縁（ひろえん）の中央に、向拝柱（こうはいばしら）、繫虹梁（つなぎこうりょう）などにより支えられた向拝が設けられている。繫虹梁の上には中備（なかぞなえ）として大瓶束（たいへいづか）を置き、両側に蟇股（かえるまた）のような笈形（おいがた）がついている。斗栱（ときょう）と垂木（たるき）の間の手挟（たばさみ）、水引虹梁（みずひきこうりょう）の木鼻（きばな）など装飾も多い。
