English: L'église romane de Saint-Germain est inscrite comme monument historique depuis 1927 pour sa façade extérieure, et en 1993 pour sa totalité y compris les fresques.
Dépendance de l’abbaye de Saint Savin au 12ème siècle, cette petite église romane se situe sur la rive droite de la Gartempe dans un cadre bucolique. Elle abrite des peintures murales du 19ème siècle qui font sa renommée. Des peintures polychromes, classiques pour l’époque, représentent notamment un Christ en majesté et, plus exceptionnelles, des peintures en « grisailles » réalisées par Octave Pichaut ornent le chœur. The Romanesque church of Saint-Germain has been listed as a historic monument since 1927 for its exterior facade, and in 1993 for its entirety including frescoes. Dependence of the abbey of Saint Savin in the 12th century, this small Romanesque church is located on the right bank of the Gartempe in a bucolic setting. It houses 19th century murals that make it famous. Polychrome paintings, classical for the time, notably represent a Christ in majesty and, more exceptional, «greyish» paintings by Octave Pichaut adorn the choir. These give the astonishing illusion of bas-relief and represent scenes from the life of Saint Germain, bishop of Auxerre and titular of the church. |
