Sanctuaire gallo-romain de Masamas (Mazamas). Les deux temples jumeaux. Ce site fut occupé dès le néolithique moyen (3500 ans environ avant J. C.). Un premier sanctuaire de tradition celtique fut remplacé dans la seconde moitié du 1er siècle après J. C. par deux temples jumeaux gallo-romains. Ce sanctuaire, à la frontière des Lemovices, des Bituriges et des Pictons, fut abandonné au IIIème, IVème siècles puis démoli. (Panneau sur le site) Le site fut redécouvert en 1945: un fermier en utilisant quatre tas de pierres pour réparer un chemin mit à jour des murailles de petit appareil. Mais c'est seulement en 1964 que l'archéologue et historien François Eygun, averti par le propriétaire du terrain et le curé de Bourg-Archambault, l'abbé Reix, identifia un site antique qu'il prit pour une "villa"; ce qui est maintenant reconnu comme un sanctuaire gallo-romain. Il ressort de différentes études qu'un "fanum", temple carré de tradition indigène, aurait été remplacé par deux temples jumeaux rectangulaires. Le fanum gallo-romain est constitué d'une pièce centrale où se trouve la divinité, la "cella", entourée par une galerie. Le plan est généralement carré. L'ensemble cella et galerie est placé dans une aire sacrée délimitée par un "péribole", presque toujours un mur. Une structure circulaire, qui n'est pas un puits, serait à l'origine du premier sanctuaire. Il s'agirait d'un "puteal", qui marque un endroit sacré, comme par exemple, et c'est souvent le cas, un endroit frappé par la foudre. Le premier sanctuaire est daté de la seconde moitié du 1er siècle avant J. C. Le second sanctuaire, avec les deux temples géminés serait de la fin du Ier siècle après J. C., voir du IIe siècle. La fréquentation du second sanctuaire aurait cessé dans le courant du IIIe siècle après J. le sanctuaire aurait ét détruit au cours du IVe siècle. Des fouilles permirent de mettre à jour de nombreuses céramiques et objets divers. La découverte de silex taillés et de tessons de céramique du néolithique moyen montre une occupation du site très ancienne. L'ensemble du sanctuaire gallo-romain est sur un plan rectangulaire (environ 55X40). Les deux temples jumeaux sont à l'ouest du sanctuaire, l'entrée à l'est et le putéale sensiblement au centre. Des bâtiments encadraient l'entrée. Les temples jumeaux, parallèles, d'environ 14X8, sont espacé d'environs 8 m. La commune de Saint-Léomer est devenue propriétaire du site récemment. |
