The heading in gold and silver lettering identifies the text that follows as Luke's Gospel: Iniciu[m] s[an]c[t]i evangelii s[e]c[un]d[u]m Lucam (The beginning of the holy Gospel according to Luke). Below, Saint Luke at a lectern sharpens his quill in order to continue writing. On the scroll unfurled before him appears a portion of his Gospel: Erit in diebus Herod[is]. . . (In the days of Herod . . .).
