Summary

[edit]
Description

sand corn, Toxicoscordion paniculatum, Nevada, Carson Valley, Indian Hills, Carson Range - Sierra Nevada drainage, elevation 1469 m (4820 ft).

This common bulb may not emerge in drier years. It is found throughout most of the sagebrush steppe zone between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada-Cascade axis of the western United States below about 2600 meters (8500 feet) elevation. As the genus name and alternate common name (death camas) imply, all parts of the plant are deadly poisonous if ingested.

Also visible in this image are Wyoming sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata wyomingensis), cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), sixweeks fescue (Festuca octoflora), sand cryptantha (Greeneocharis circumscissa), shy gilia (Gilia inconspicua), and whitestem stickleaf (Mentzelia albicaulis).
