Die Skulpturen wurden passend zur Orangerie-Nutzung des Gebäudes gewählt: Die der Natur verbundenen Gestalten der antiken Mythologie ergänzen die der Sonne, der Zeit und der Gartenarbeit gewidmete Attikakartusche von Friedrich Christian Glume (1714-1752) über dem Mittelrisalit der Neuen Kammern.

Sowohl das Motiv der ungezügelten Natur als auch der kunsttheoretische Ansatz des Antikenzitats stehen in Beziehung zu den Fassadenskulpturen der von 1755 bis 1763 östlich des Schlosses Sanssouci erbauten Bildergalerie. An der Bildergalerie verwirklichte Friedrich der Große ein akademisches Lehrprogramm der Bildenden Künste.
