(Guadalajara, Jalisco, México. 1685- Ciudad de México, México, 1756) Santa Catalina de Alejandría ca. 1710 Óleo sobre tela Museo Nacional de Arte, INBAL Transcripción de la ficha: "Santa Catalina de Alejandría ha sido modelo de virtud y sapiencia en la tradición de las vírgenes capitales. Enfrentada teológicamente a los sabios de Alejandría, logró convertirlos al cristianismo a partir de su erudición y conocimiento de las Escrituras. Santiago de Vorágine, en su Leyenda dorada, refiere que el emperador Majencio quiso hacerla su manceba y ante la negativa de Catalina, ordenó que la martirizaran en una rueda dentada que, sin embargo, fue destruida por un ángel de Dios. Al final, perdió la cabeza a golpe de espada. En esta representación, sujeta el arma de su martirio con la punta hacia el suelo como referencia al triunfo espiritual sobre la ignorancia y el paganismo. José de Ibarra retomó una «estampa viajera» a partir de un grabado de Rubens para replicar la iconografía de la santa, con las líneas suaves y la riqueza tonal que heredó de su maestro, el célebre Juan Correa."
