English: Open air museum Roscheider Hof
The iron has a red lacquered wooden handle with a nose that could be clamped onto the iron . With the button sitting on a spring (on the bottom plate of the handle) the handle can be detached from the lower part. On the underside of the base plate of the handle are the following inscriptions: P A C K 105 and at the bottom of the spring 406. On the top of the radiators, in the middle (sekrecht), there is P A O K and at the top of it the number - relative to the radiator set, which belong to a handle. Set irons go back to an American patent from 1871. They have an iron top insulated with asbestos and a releasable wooden handle that could be clamped onto one of the usually 4 irons. Over time, manufacturers developed many different clamping mechanisms. Before ironing, the iron was heated on a cooker and then the wooden handle was put on to smooth the laundry. When ironing, several irons are heated on a stove at the same time. An iron is clamped to the handle and ironing is done with it. If the iron becomes too cold over time, the handle is disconnected and another hot iron is attached. The iron can then be used immediately for ironing, and the cooled lower part is placed on the cooker. Set irons quickly became popular because they were much easier and safer to use than bolt irons. Even after electrification, they were still in use for a long time, also for reasons of economy. |
