Description

Sawmill Geyser is a frequently-erupting, moderate-sized geyser in the Sawmill Group of Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin. Eruptions are usually long-duration and involve discrete splashing bursts every second or so (for example, see: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3pI3K6CLSY" rel="nofollow">www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3pI3K6CLSY</a>). Sawmill was last seen erupting at the end of January 2017. It has been dormant ever since. Sawmill Geyser's dormancy has been accompanied by changes in other Sawmill Group features - some are also inactive or near-inactive, others have become more active, or are engaging in atypical behavior.

Shown above is Sawmill Geyser in dormancy in summer 2017. The splash pools and runoff channel are dry. A calm pool of relatively cool water is present in the vent area (see nearby pictures in this photostream), with some yellowish-orangish-brownish microbial mats coating parts of the geyserite.
