[edit]DescriptionScene in Kattiawar, Travellers and Escort.jpg |
English: Scene in Kattiawar, Travellers and Escort. Medium: Aquatint, coloured. Grindlay (1786-1877) was only 17 when he arrived in India in 1803. He served with the Bombay Native Infantry from 1804 to 1820 and during this period made a large collection of sketches and drawings. Kathiawar in Gujarat falls between the Gulf of Kachch and the Gulf of Khambat (Cambay) and was part of the Bombay Presidency. Of the scene represented here Grindlay writes: "The progress of their caravans when in motion, and their motley appearance when bivouacked for the night's halt are strikingly picturesque ... the varied figures of the mercantile travellers and their wild military escort, offer some of the richest subjects for the pencil that can be imagined." |
