Summary
[edit]DescriptionSeattle - Building at E Union St. and Broadway Ct.jpg |
English: This building once located at 953 E Union Street was home to Otto's Radiator Shop for over 50 years. Started by Otto Rinderhagen and his wife in 1935, they sold the business in 1963 and it continued to operate under various owners into the 1990s.
The gabled portion of the building actually dates back to 1899, when local attorney Henry W. Lung had 4 identical cottages built facing Broadway Ct, then known as 10th Ave. As this part of Capitol Hill began to transition into commercial use with many new automobile-related businesses in the 1910s, the corner cottage, 1142 10th Ave, was rotated 90 degrees to face Union Street and converted into a shop, with the 1-story annex added about 1918 when the building first began to be used by automobile businesses. The other 3 cottages had all been demolished by the 1960s. By the time this photo was taken, it was still in use as a detailing shop. Abandoned by 2014 and demolished in 2019, a condo tower is now being built in its place. |
