Illustration of secondary active transport via the sodium-glucose cotransporter

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The image shows secondary active transport in the small intestine. In this process diffusion of glucose from the lumen of the small intestine to the inside of enterocytes is facilitated by means of the sodium-glucose symporter located on the apical side of the cell. The sodium-potassium pump and glucose transporter on the basal side ensures that intracellular levels of sodium ions and glucose, respectively, is low enough to maintain transport of glucose into the cells.
